Pepsi Refresh

In April we began hearing stories about the explosion on the oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, and that 11 men had lost their lives.  By May, many Gulf Coast residents were already boycotting BP, and were being financially affected by this situation.  In May I began the application process for Pepsi Refresh Project.  And on July 1st, I was notified that my idea had been selected to compete!  If i win, my idea will be funded by Pepsi with a $250,000 grant.  What is my amazing idea you may be asking.. well let me tell you..

The beginning is very simple, I want to start a farm here in Northern Florida, the panhandle of the beautiful Gulf Coast.. Well the farm will be multipurpose.  It will grow things needed for alternative fuels, to produce other fuels that burn cleaner and cost less, like bio diesel and E85.  Secondly it will be a farm to grow organic foods to be marketed locally.  Then, lastly, and as a mother of 3, the most exciting part to me, I want to build a learning center on the grounds.  A place for children to come on field trips or family trips to learn about being green.  To learn about recycling, eating better foods, saving energy, and in essence save the world we are giving them.  I am naming the farm using the year 2022 as that is the year my oldest son turns 18 and that is when I start handing over the world to them.  And I would like to give it to them in better shape than it currently is.  I want it to be a better place for them.  I want us all to reduce our "footprint" in any little way possible so that this world will last for generations to come.  As it seems that mother nature has been revolting against us lately.  

Along with being Earth friendly, another goal is creating employment here on the Gulf Coast.  After the oil spill and the downward economy, we could all use a pick up in the job market.  Who knows, for many out of work fishermen maybe farming and teaching kids could be the boost we need.  It may seem regressive to want to start a farm, but it is a progressive farm.  Let's face it, we are not gonna be able to keep going at the rate we are destroying the world, we need to step back and take a look at it and try to make repairs to it.  It is a beautiful thing, and I want it to be here for a long time to come.  For my children and your's.  And the many generations with their many ambitions to come.
